For more information on Policy Governance, you are best to go to the source – the inventor of the Policy Governance model, John Carver. His website is www.policygovernance.com. Of special help on this website is the FAQ section, which offers dozens of answers to common questions asked about Policy Governance. We recommend you spend some time going through this section, scrolling through the questions and reading the appropriate answers. All the sections are very helpful, but here are links to two sections that might help those who are just thinking about getting started with Policy Governance (all links open in a new page):
-Governance Theory – http://www.policygovernance.com/faq1.htm
-Getting Started – http://www.policygovernance.com/faq11.htm
In Dave’s experience with Policy Governance, he has learned two major “musts” for any Board that is considering the model:
- -It’s “all or nothing.” You either use the entire Policy Governance model or you don’t. Any modification to it means that it is no longer Policy Governance. Dave has enough experience in this model to know that those who try to use some “modification” of Policy Governance usually have more problems that if they had just left it alone.
- -The implementation of Policy Governance is best done with a qualified Policy Governance trainer. While John Carver does not “certify” trainers, he stipulates that only those who go through the Policy Governance Academy are qualified to train Boards in Policy Governance. Dave has worked closely with Dr. Richard Biery to help facilitate Policy Governance training. Dr. Biery is a graduate of the Carver Academy and was heavily involved in the training and practice of Policy Governance. While both Dave and Dick Biery have retired from actively training and supporting Boards, Dave can provide you with direct contact to professionals who are still currently providing this service. He can also get you in touch with Dick Biery who may have additional resources.
