Dave Baseler is currently a Friend and Helper. After retirement from his formal work life, he spent many years as a mentor to ministries, during which he provided business assistance and coaching in Communication, Leadership, Organization and Boardsmanship, primarily to Christian non-profit groups. Now in his mid-80s, he spends his time helping individuals and organizations where he can, mostly through email and phone calls.
Dave is a former Vice President of Marketing Services for The ServiceMaster Company. Throughout his career with ServiceMaster, Dave served in a wide variety of marketing and communications functions. While managing the Marketing Services departments for both ServiceMaster Corporate and ServiceMaster Consumer Services, he introduced and led the corporate identity programs for all ServiceMaster companies. He also designed and produced the Company’s annual report, working with senior corporate and financial leadership. One of his major projects was to serve as editor of the best-selling book, “The Soul of the Firm,” written by ServiceMaster Chairman C. William Pollard.
Before joining ServiceMaster, Dave served as Marketing Manager for several divisions of Eaton Corporation, where he managed the company’s identity program. He also spent 10 years in radio and TV broadcasting and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He is a graduate of Wheaton College in Illinois with a BA in Speech.
After retirement from ServiceMaster in 1999, Dave spent several years as Business Manager at a Christian camp in North Carolina. In 2005, he spent 10 months as Interim US Director for a mission sending agency in Pennsylvania. He also worked with a variety of non-profits to help them rebrand and rename the organizations, and was recognized for his ability to successfully lead groups through the renaming process.
Dave served as a director and officer on a number of Christian non-profit Boards. In early 2010, he began working with Dr. Richard Biery to provide training and coaching in the Carver system of Policy Governance. Dave was trained by several Policy Governance experts, including the system inventors, John and Miriam Carver. During his board service, he implemented the Policy Governance system for several boards on which he served. He also trained numerous other non-profit boards, working closely with board members and staffs to train and support them in their ongoing use of Policy Governance.
In mid-2012, Dave began working with Delta One Leadership Institute, where he served as Executive Director until the end of 2022. As part of his Delta One responsibilities, Dave also worked again with C. William Pollard as agent, editor and marketing manager for Bill’s latest book, “The Tides of Life.” He still works with Bill Pollard on projects as requested. See “Bill Pollard Books” on the menu at left.
Dave also started and managed his own business ventures. From 1996 to 2016, he led an overnight rental business of two houses in Gatlinburg, TN. He and his family marketed and managed their own rentals online, dealing with both rental guests and local suppliers. The business was very successful, achieving occupancy rates of almost 60% (in a market where 25% is the average occupancy rate). One of the houses was sold in 2015 and the other was destroyed in the November 2016 Gatlinburg fires. More information is still available at www.dbaseler.org/SRD.
Dave and his wife, Phyllis, have three daughters, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They live in Taylorsville, NC, where they attend East Taylorsville Baptist Church, and Dave serves on the Board of Directors. He continues to be involved other local organizations. He works closely with the Alexander Friends of the Library and is currently the president of the Homeowners Association where he and Phyllis live.
